My Bully Child

At Love and Logic we've spent a good deal of time and energy talking about what parents can do if their children are being picked on at school. Sally Ogden's book, Words Will Never Hurt Me is a wonderful resource for helping kids who are being victimized.

But what do we do if our child is the one doing the bullying?

• With great empathy, inform your child that it really drains your energy when you find out that they've been hassling other kids
  
• Expect them to replace the energy they've drained by doing extra chores, hiring someone to watch them, etc.
  
• Expect them to do something nice for the victim, as well as the teachers who've had to deal with the problem at school. Saying, "I'm sorry" is not enough.
  
• Kids with a second or third grade reading ability may benefit from doing a book report on Words Will Never Hurt Me.
  
• Address the underlying hurt within your child by providing even more love and attention. Don't hesitate to get professional help if the problem continues.
